Ah, pumpkins. Whether for picking, carving, or mashing into everyone’s favourite pie, it’s time to give these gourds the thanks they deserve. While a delicious, nutritious carb in itself - we want to shine the spotlight on the real MVP, their seeds! Here’s a couple reasons why everyone should try and incorporate more of them into their diets.
Sleep better. As a rich source of tryptophan, an amino acid converted by our bodies into the hormones melatonin and serotonin, pumpkin seeds help to reduce anxiety and help you get a good night's sleep (and let’s face it - some of us need all the help we can get!)
Feel fuller. Relative to their size, these little guys are chock-full of protein needed to keep you full throughout the day - containing about 7 grams per small handful. Combined with fiber, they’ll keep you feeling satiated longer and help stabilize blood sugar levels - helping prevent those pesky afternoon crashes.
Combat acidity. Due to their chlorophyll content (making them green-tinged), raw pumpkin seeds are one of the only seeds that are alkaline-forming in the body - helping to balance out commonly acidic diets and maintain a healthy pH level.
Ward off anemia. Iron is an essential nutrient that many of us are lacking in - often resulting in chronic lethargy and anemia. Easily get in 23% of the recommended daily value of this vital element in just one serving.
Promote heart health. Pumpkin seeds are a great source of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids - both crucial to reducing inflammation. Coupled with a strong dose of magnesium (essential to regulating blood pressure!) pumpkin seeds support healthy circulatory systems.
Think Zinc! In addition to magnesium, manganese, potassium and copper, pumpkin seeds contain high levels of Zinc - a mineral vital to boosting the immune system that’s often lacking in plant-based diets.
The best part? They taste amazing, and are easily incorporated into any diet! Sprinkle them on top of salads, blend into smoothies, or grab a handful by themselves to get your daily dose of plant-based nutrition.
Find them in our house-made Pumpkin Seed Mylk - a creamy blend of organic pumpkin seeds, cinnamon, dates and alkaline water - or on top of the Warm & Hearty!
