We love starting our day with a smoothie or sipping on one as an afternoon snack. So, as you can imagine, we’ve done a lot of experimenting with flavours and ingredients to create recipes that nourish AND taste great. Lucky for you, we’re sharing our top recommendations for smoothie boosters to help you take your smoothies to the next level.
Nut Butter
An easy way to add a boost of protein and healthy fats to any smoothie is to add a tablespoon of nut butter. The nut butter also gives your smoothie a creamy texture and adds depth of flavour.
Maca
Maca is a plant native to Peru that has been used for centuries as a natural medicine for its reported benefits including improved energy, mood, and libido. Maca is typically sold as a powder, making it super easy to add to your smoothies for that added energy boost. We love pairing the benefits of maca with the antioxidants of blueberries and cinnamon in our Blueberry Maca Smoothie to create a nutritious breakfast that tastes like dessert.
Spirulina
Spirulina is one of our favourite antioxidant superfood boosters because it’s one of the most nutrient-dense foods on Earth. It’s packed with vitamins and minerals and has a whopping 4 grams of plant-based protein in just a single tablespoon! As a form of blue-green algae, spirulina can have a sea-like taste, so we balance the flavour with nut butter and bananas in our Nutty Green Smoothie to create a healthy smoothie that gives your body the building blocks it needs to fuel your day.
Goji Berries
Goji berries are red fruits packed with antioxidants and have a sweet, slightly sour flavour. Goji berries are an excellent source of Vitamin A which supports a healthy immune system and skin health. We’re particularly partial to including this superfood in our Raspberry Nut Butter Smoothie as a way to add antioxidants and complement the tart raspberry flavour.
Protein Powder
While fruit and vegetable-based smoothies have tons of nutritional benefits, they can be low in protein. An easy way to increase the protein in your smoothie and keep you feeling fuller longer is to add a scoop of plant-based protein powder. This is especially important if your smoothie is your post-workout recovery drink. We keep several flavours on hand so we can switch things up depending on the other ingredients we’re working with or just our preferences for the day! A new favourite of ours is the Sprout Living Vegan Pro Collagen protein powder which contains vitamins, minerals, and functional mushrooms that help boost your body’s collagen production.
Spinach
If you prefer a fruitier smoothie, adding a handful or two of spinach can be an easy way to increase greens in your diet. Spinach is extremely nutrient-rich, with high amounts of Vitamins A and C as well as folic acid and iron. It has a mild flavour that’s easily masked by the sweetness of fruits or tartness of citrus making it easy to sneak this superfood into your smoothies virtually undetected! Adding spinach is also a great way to help thicken up a thin smoothie.
Adding boosters to your smoothies is an excellent way to nourish your body and with so many options it’s easy to customize your smoothie to meet your personal health goals.
If you’re feeling short on time, we’ve created Ready-To-Blend Smoothies that have all the ingredients necessary for you to prepare our favourite recipes at home: Nutty Green, Raspberry Nut Butter, and Blueberry Maca. Just add liquid and blend!
